Your impact on pollution - Takeout Packaging

Dilemma

The increasingly serious pollution of take-out packaging has made the take-out industry a key area of domestic plastic pollution problems.

Under the COVID-19 pandemic, more and more people, especially young people, choose takeaway food in Singapore. This will result in the consumption of a large amount of take-out packaging. Nearly 80% of take-out packaging is plastic products. These discarded packaging and tableware are rarely recycled in the existing recycling system, which will cause serious resource waste and environmental pollution problems.

Today, food delivery has become an indispensable part of urban life. Ordering, grocery shopping, daily necessities and even medicines all involve takeaway services. So the question is, what should I use without plastic bags?

"Environmentally friendly plastic bags may become the mainstream. Environmentally friendly plastic bags are not only biodegradable, but also can be recycled and remanufactured after use." Environmentally friendly plastic bags are short for various types of biodegradable plastic bags, which can replace traditional PE plastic materials. All indicators of the product meet or exceed the national quality standards. It is hygienic, non-toxic, and non-polluting. It is currently one of the most advanced environmentally friendly products in the world.

Suggestions:

1. At present, Singapore has not issued an overall implementation plan for packaging reduction in the take-out industry and clearly clarifies the responsibilities and division of labor of various departments, which makes it difficult to influence and promote related parties such as take-out platforms and catering businesses to participate in substantive take-out packaging reduction actions.

2. At the same time, the main body responsible for the management of takeaway packaging and the content of its responsibility are not clear. The government needs to formulate special take-out packaging governance regulations and methods at the national level; policies and regulations related to take-out packaging governance issues need to be revised and improved as soon as possible.

3. The government needs to require food delivery platforms to optimize the corresponding product functions, formulate a "no tableware" merchant supervision system, and also need to strengthen guidance and incentives for consumers. It is recommended that the government support and encourage the pilot and development of the shared circulating tableware model.

4. The application of biodegradable plastics will also become an important part of Singapore's plastic pollution prevention and control work.
